Dr. Petri Juuti is a historian and Docent/Adjunct Professor in Environmental History (in University of Tampere), in History of Technology (in University of Oulu) and Docent/Adjunct Professor in Finnish History (in University of Turku). He is currently working as Senior researcher in University of Tampere. Previously he has worked as Visiting Professor in the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, Senior researcher in WaterTime –project funded by European Commission, Assistant Professor (2002-2004) and as researcher in the University of Tampere and the Ministry of the Interior and has also worked in business life.

His major area of interest is environmental history, especially urban environment, urban technology, pollution, public policy, and political history. He is also interested in development studies and economic history.

Dr. Juuti is the author or co author of 17 referee articles and 19 books, few latest ones are Brief History of Wells and Toilets (2005), Water, Time and European Cities (2005, with Katko), Environmental History of Water (2007, with Katko&Vuorinen), and Water: a Matter of Life - Long-term strategic thinking in water services (2008, with Katko&Rajala).

His work has gained national and international awards. Several of his publications are used as a course books in Universities in Finland and other countries, e.g. in the Oxford University, the University of Alabama, and the Ochanomizu University.

In academic year 2007-08, Dr Juuti is working as a senior researcher in UTACAS. http://www.uta.fi/laitokset/yty/utacas/english.html

His research themes in this year are as follows:

As a resource, water is threatened by problems of quantity and quality in an age of heavy population growth, industrialisation and climate change. Sustainable use of water resources is vital to the well-being of both urban and rural dwellers, the national economy and urban water supply. Insecure access to water and sanitation services has also been known to lead to conflicts in many societies.

Cities in the EU face common challenges. These can be tackled by developing viable policies and principles at the European level. The research aims to reveal historical path dependencies and to present those of today and the future(s) that create bottlenecks as well as path dependencies that prevent meeting the MDGs. Historical study that sheds light on the complexity of water supply and sanitation services at the edge of any social/economical/political changes answers many questions in the field of futures research. Thus, a trustworthy outline of the future must be based on historical analyses. We have to learn how earlier choices affect development paths. We can look back into history to pinpoint factors of success and turning points.
The general objective of the research is to discover the key strategic decisions that have affected the overall evolution of water and sanitation services in the case countries. The research examines which strategies, principles and practices have resulted in historically significant changes in overall development of water supply and sanitation. This requires analysing the environment, water supply and sanitation and mental concepts in a long-term perspective.
