The City of Tampere
The IWHA 2007 Conference will be held in Tampere, Finland. The city established in 1779 between two lakes on the banks of the Tammerkoski Rapids by King Gustavus III of Sweden has a long history of traditional industrial production – pulp, paper, textiles, and many other products. Today’s post-industrial Tampere has 200,000 inhabitants and is a dynamic centre of research, technology, education, culture, sports and business. Letter of invitation

The TAVI Congress Bureau can send a letter of invitation, if requested, only after full payment has been received. It should be understood that such a letter is only to help the participant raise travel funds or to obtain a visa and is not a commitment on the part of the organizers to provide any financial support. Finland is a member of the European Union and visas are not required for citizens of other EU countries. Citizens of non-EU countries should contact the nearest Finnish Embassy or travel agency for further information.

Getting to Tampere

By air
Tampere is located 180 kilometres northwest from Helsinki and is easily accessible by air, bus or train. There are several daily flights to Finland from major cities in Europe. Good connections from North America and Asia are also available. There are frequent daily flights between Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL) and Tampere-Pirkkala Airport (TMP), the flight takes only 30 minutes. There are also direct flights from Stockholm and Copenhagen to Tampere-Pirkkala Airport. Please note that the budget airline Ryanair also flies to Tampere-Pirkkala Airport from several European cities. The official airline is Scandinavian Airlines (SAS). To obtain a special fare from SAS, please call your nearest SAS office and quote your reference number FI0706. Tampere-Pirkkala Airport is located about 15 km from the city centre. There is a special Airport Taxi, which can be ordered at the airport as well as at the hotel reception. There is also regular taxi and bus service from the airport to the centre of Tampere.

By train

Comfortable train service between Helsinki and Tampere city centres also exists. From Helsinki-Vantaa Airport it is easy to take a bus to Helsinki city centre or Tikkurila railway station and board a train there. By bus
